Chimney repair work we cover

Repointing of mortar joints between bricks, full strip and rebed of flaunching at the top of the stack, chimney pot replacement and cowl fitting (anti-bird, anti-downdraft, gas-rated), redundant chimney capping with vented cap, partial or full chimney rebuild from a stable course upwards, lead flashing renewal at the chimney base, lead soakers between roof and stack, lead apron and back gutter detailing where the chimney meets a pitched roof. Most chimney work is quoted fixed-price after a 30-minute on-site survey. Scaffold included where required.

Lead grades and why Code 4 vs Code 5 matters

Lead is graded by thickness. Code 4 lead (1.80mm) is standard for most domestic flashings, soakers and step details. Code 5 lead (2.24mm) is the better call for valley liners, larger aprons and any detail exposed to ponding water or snow load. We use Code 5 on valleys and exposed back gutters as standard, Code 4 elsewhere, all dressed by hand following Lead Sheet Training Academy (LSA) technique. Cheaper alternatives like lead-replacement membranes have their place but they do not match real lead for lifespan or fire rating, so we use them only where the customer specifically asks.

Repointing, flaunching and chimney rebuilds

If you can see crumbling mortar joints between the bricks of your stack, the joints need raking out and repointing in a lime-compatible mortar matched to the original mix. If the flaunching at the top of the stack (the sloped mortar bed that holds the pots in place) is cracked, water tracks straight down through the stack into the chimney breast and the ceiling below. Full rebuilds are needed when a stack has cracked horizontally, leaned out of plumb, or lost too many courses to repoint. We dismantle to a sound course, photograph every brick layout for matching, and rebuild using salvaged bricks where possible to preserve the original look on period properties.

Chimney pots, cowls and bird-proofing

Loose pots are a common storm-night call. We re-bed in fresh flaunching with Code 4 lead apron at the base. If a chimney is no longer in use we cap it with a vented cap (sealed against rain but vented to stop condensation in the flue). Bird-proof cowls fit standard pot sizes and stop pigeons nesting in the flue without restricting draw on a working fire. Anti-downdraft cowls solve the cold-fireplace problem where wind pulls smoke back into the room. All cowl work is fitted on the same call as any other repointing or leadwork to save you a second scaffold. Call 01244 727509 or use the form below.

Frequently asked questions about chimney & leadwork

How do I know if my chimney needs repointing? +

If you see crumbling mortar on the driveway after a windy night, visible gaps between the bricks of the stack, or damp patches on the ceiling near the chimney breast, the joints have failed and water is getting in. Worth a survey before the next freeze-thaw season.

What's the difference between Code 4 and Code 5 lead? +

Thickness. Code 4 (1.80mm) is the standard for flashings, soakers and step details. Code 5 (2.24mm) is heavier and lasts longer in exposed positions like valleys, back gutters and large aprons. We use Code 5 on valleys as standard.

Can you rebuild a leaning chimney? +

Yes, if a stack has cracked horizontally, leaned out of plumb, or lost too many courses to repoint, we dismantle to a sound course and rebuild. Salvaged bricks are reused where possible to preserve the original appearance on period properties.

Do you do bird-proofing? +

Yes, anti-bird cowls fit standard pot sizes and stop pigeons nesting in the flue. Fitted on the same scaffold as any other chimney work.
